Gil Benbrook and
Phoenix Theater

Gil Benbrook is a lifelong theatre lover who spent over 25 years working and seeing around 100 plays, musicals, concerts and cabaret shows a year in the New York City area as well as attending many other shows during frequent trips to the UK before relocating to Phoenix.

The first national tour he saw was Sweeney Todd with June Havoc as Mrs. Lovett, and the first Broadway show he attended was Sunday in the Park with George with Mandy Patinkin. Gil worked for two entertainment companies in NYC for over 27 years and through his various positions served as the business manager for the inaugural year of the Broadway Musical of A Christmas Carol at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden that featured a score by Alan Menken and Lynn Ahrens, direction by Mike Ockrent, choreography by Susan Stroman with sets, costumes and lighting by Tony Walton, William Ivey Long and Jules Fisher/Peggy Eisenhauer and musical direction by Paul Gemignani. It was a vastly rewarding experience, with a hugely talented and multiple Tony winning creative team and cast and Gil was happy to learn so much about what goes on in putting on a $25 million dollar Broadway musical as well as getting his name in the Playbill for his efforts. He was the first production accountant hired by MTV Networks and worked at this Viacom division during the creation of some of their biggest hit shows as well as the launch of many of their cable channels.

Gil graduated from the Indiana University School of Business with a concentration in Film Studies and recently created a theatre and movie blog. He is also a huge fan of "flop" musicals, having attended dozens on Broadway including Nick & Nora, Metro, Starmites, The Red Shoes, The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public, Cyrano, Big, Steel Pier, Thou Shalt Not, , Lestat, Side Show and High Fidelity as well as the leader of them all, Carrie. His favorite musical is Sweeney Todd, his favorite play Twelve Angry Men, his favorite opera is Carmen, and his favorite performer is Betty Buckley, having seen her perform in musicals, plays and concerts close to thirty times over the past twenty years.

Gil lives in Glendale and is proud to be a resident of the Valley of the Sun and extremely pleased with the quality and quantity of theatre available in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
